After the fall of Oromia

By Totolamo Bitacha,

The following is from Teessisso Korroso, Kofale area of Arsi region. He was a very well known elder in the area and I had an opportunity to visit him before his death. He had a lot but this among the few that I have saved. The poem reflects the conditions of Oromo during Nafxanya invasion of the region, the coming of the Italians, the reign of Zawditu and Iyaasu. I tried to categorize them when possible. This should serve as a historical reference to what the population in that specific area felt at that particular time in our history.

After the fall of Oromiya

Sadaa jiraa mandareen
Sadaa didee gabbare

Amaarri waaqaa
Qaween bakakka’a
Ka gabartu jabaadhu
Ka dheessitu fagaadhu

Amaara ankoobarii
Amaara hanxooxami

Amaara kophee shanani
Xophee dhabami

Yaa Arsi biyya wolaabu
Biyya bishaan ankoola’at woraabu
Bakka bayee mataan hin wollaluu

Siinqille jalaan kasa’a
Siinqe’etii nu deebise ka Sallaqa Diina’a

Amaarri mara safee,
Shabbeenaan amba shafee,
Lafa maraa kaasanii
Kofaletti Boruun hafe.

Ta Amaara iraasi
Hin diimatti gilaasii
Gadab keessa gadi lufee
Kun diinuma biraati

Baasa dilii baranaa
Galgaloofnaan iyyumaa
Gagaarrifnaan suunsuma
Ka anfarro dhuujumaa
Samii gubbaa guunguma
Garaa sodaanne jirraa
Itti yaane suutuma

Sawara agoyotaa
Coofariitti gatadhe dhagaraa kiyya moofa
Abbaa marara bootaan
Waacifa jalli goota
Waacuun jalli dhaddota
Gabaaba jalli goota
Qishoo bultii cawootaa
Eessuma Hinikka’a
Lagumaa nutti yaate
Gaangiin himimsa’a
Ka Worqina shifta’a
Ka waarii balacootaa
Isiin afaan hin beettu
Achiyuu abbaa waamtti
Osoo Amaarri argee
Abbaa nyaattee allaattiin.

Worii mirga dhossa’a
Osoo Arsiin wonjalee
Osoo Amaarri dhagayee
Wo horoo fanno baatut?

The coming of the Italian
Korophilaan bararee gara gabaa Nago’o
Nagaya maaltu jira Birraa kana qaxaroon.

Korophilaan barare garri lachuu qolo’o
Haga kan duule galuuf, dinnee jedhaa horo’o

Iyaasu’s Reign
Iyyaasuun bade,
Maalaan dhayii dhedi naasuu malee.

Zawditu’s Reign
Aanan gala gabayaa hin raasani hoo
Nadhee siree irrati oli baasanii hoo
Dil jetee ciifte sire
Sawudituu sitti gabaabse hire.

Editor’s note : For an average reader (like me), who has very little background knowledge of the invasion and conquest of Oromia, especially the Arsi area referenced in this poem, it could be a hard read. But the underlying message speaks to the unwavering resistance of the Oromo nation. I hope someone reading this will add on and also write this into an essay with explanations.
