Ethiopia addresses Egypt’s current affairs
Peace and stability in Egypt is in the interest of both nations, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement published on its website.
Ethiopia is constructing a mega hydroelectric dam, which Egypt says threatens its share of the Nile waters. Tension between the two countries rose in May when Ethiopia began diverting water from the Blue Nile to fill the reservoir. Prior to Morsi’s ouster last week, Ethiopia’s foreign minister was expected to travel to Egypt to continue talks between the two countries.
Now with all the attention focused on Egypt’s internal crisis, as Voice of America’s Marthe van der Wolf writes, Ethiopia is proceeding with construction even as environmental experts and diplomats continue to work out Nile River resource management among affected countries.
