Irrelevant the OLF Maybe, the Struggle Is For Justice

By Oromsis Adula*

I read the piece about OLF that appeared on EthioMedia by certain Jigga Wakko, a temptingly Oromo sounding name even if misspelled. I am also aware of the exchange between Shiferew Abebe and Dumessaa Diimmaa that prompted Mr. Wakko to pen his grossly uninformed charges against OLF.

Africa Is Not a Victim of Nature; It Is a Victor of Nature

Somehow India, which has been blessed with natural irrigation systems, has been buying land in Ethiopia, which is not as blessed, to grow water-hogging crops such as rice and export them to India and elsewhere. The question is, why couldn't Ethiopia grow these foods, feed its own people, and export the rest to India and other countries, creating jobs and wealth for Ethiopians in the process?

Ethiopia Faces Era Of One-Party Rule

News

By Peter Heinlein, Voice of America

Ethiopia's 2010 election all but wiped out the country's once vibrant political opposition.  This means that Ethiopia faces the prospect of one-party rule for the foreseeable future. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi categorically rejects characterizations of Ethiopia as a one-party state.  Speaking to reporters last week, he likened the Horn of Africa nation to Japan or Botswana, where opposition groups operate, but one party dominates the political landscape.

Gambling: Meles Zenawi’s New Foreign Policy Doctrine

Jawar S. Mohammed*

In recent years, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has been pushing hard to signal to the West that they cannot use their leverage to pressure him into undertaking economic and political reforms that threaten his power. At times, he propagandizes his seemingly anti-imperialist “nationalism” against these so called “neoliberal” pressures. His most recent media briefing continued this anti-West rhetoric, but with a different vocabulary. He was blunt and appeared overconfident. He announced the closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Sweden, followed by a declaration that, since the economy will grow by 14.9%, Ethiopia could free itself from food aid dependence in a short five years. Whether this is Meles Zenawi’s lofty rhetoric, genuine attempt, or a shift in foreign policy directives, I believe it is an unwise blunder with far reaching consequences for everyone in the country.

Miss Oromo 2010Miss Oromo 2010The Miss Oromo Pageant goes back to 2003, the last time the North American Oromo Soccer Tournament was held in Seattle, WA.  At that time, a group of young Oromo ladies in Seattle wanted to do something unique to entertain and educate the crowd that was in town for the Oromo week festivities. The event was the first of its kind in the OSFNA tradition and was well attended. OSFNA is the acronym for the Oromo Sport Federation in North America, a premier Oromo organization, established in 1996.

By Kate Linthicum, Los Angeles Times

The U.S. gives about $1 billion annually to Ethiopia. But even as U.S. and other international aid has surged in the last decade, activists charge that the government has become more authoritarian.

Reporting from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Like many in the West, former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn watched the country's recent elections for signs that democracy was finally taking root.
