Miss Oromo 2010The Miss Oromo Pageant goes back to 2003, the last time the North American Oromo Soccer Tournament was held in Seattle, WA. At that time, a group of young Oromo ladies in Seattle wanted to do something unique to entertain and educate the crowd that was in town for the Oromo week festivities. The event was the first of its kind in the OSFNA tradition and was well attended. OSFNA is the acronym for the Oromo Sport Federation in North America, a premier Oromo organization, established in 1996.

The U.S. gives about $1 billion annually to Ethiopia. But even as U.S. and other international aid has surged in the last decade, activists charge that the government has become more authoritarian.
Reporting from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Like many in the West, former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia David Shinn watched the country's recent elections for signs that democracy was finally taking root.

Ethiopia’s opposition Oromo People’s Congress criticized a report by a donor group into allegations that the government manipulated foreign aid for political gain ahead of general elections in May.
The Development Assistance Group, an Addis Ababa-based body comprising 26 agencies that give assistance to Ethiopia, examined four programs that receive about $1.5 billion a year from donors. Its report found that two of the four programs “face important challenges” and concluded that while all four have accountability systems that provide checks on “distortion for political gain,” they should be strengthened further.
Meles ZenawiEthiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi says bilateral ties with the United States are on the mend after months of tensions. Mr. Meles promised a wholesale government reshuffle due in October will include a restructuring of Ethiopia's diplomatic missions. The Ethiopian leader told reporters Wednesday that what he called 'a rough stretch' in relations with Washington appears to be over.
"I think the rather difficult stretch we have had in the past six-seven months is by and large behind us now," he said. "There are issues on which the officials in the United States feel strongly and differently, and there are issues on which we feel strongly and differently from those of the United States. We will agree to disagree on those we do not agree on, and we agree to work together on issues of common interest."
EthiopiaAccording to a new index developed by Oxford University and the UN, Ethiopia under Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is ranked the second poorest country on earth.
The new measurement known as the Multidimensional Poverty Index, or MPI, will replace the Human Poverty Index in the United Nations' annual Human Development Report. The new report says Ethiopia has the second highest percentage of people who are MPI poor in the world, with only the west African nation of Niger fairing worse. This comes as more international analysts have also begun to question the accuracy of the Meles government's double-digit economic growth claims and similar disputed government statistics referred by institutions like the IMF.

2010 OSFNA ChampsThe Summer That Has Been: Recap of Summer Oromo Events in North America
By Oromsis Adula*
Oromo Convention in North America A little over a year ago, I wrote a brief article inquiring from the OSFNA where we were headed. At that time, the issues were much more trivial and had to do for the most part with OSFNA’s financial troubles. In that piece and another that sought to ask all Oromos the same question, I attempted to point at the need to strengthen and nurture civic organizations such as OSFNA in order to keep the morale of the people intact.
