In Ethiopia, Election campaign is in full swing – at least by Ethiopian standard. The marginalized opposition parties are going toe to toe with the ruling party making pitches to voters. The experience of 2005's aborted election renders a cloud of fear over the country. On the one hand; the ruling party, although by all indications determined to quash any attempt at democratic contest, is nervous not knowing how the public would react. On the other hand, the opposition is working steadfastly within the tight political space to win the hearts of voters and make known the illegitimacy of the election to the rest of the world – at the event the ruling party once again declares itself a winner.

In a recent televised debate, Medrek, a coalition of eight opposition parties, announced its intention to make Oromo, along with Amharic, the official working language if it wins the election. Dr. Merera Gudina, the chairman of the coalition, made the announcement citing the experience of countries like Canada (French and English) and South Africa (at least eleven official languages).

The declaration of official bilingualism is aimed at easing the fear of Oromo public and a working compromise with the Oromo opposition – mainly the Oromo Federalist Congress. Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) is formed by the merger of two prominent Oromo opposition parties, the Oromo People Congress  ( OPC) led by Professor Merera Gudina, and the Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) , founded by the renowned Oromo intellectual and statesman, Bulcha Demeksa.

Professor Merera affirmed that all parties in the coalition support the idea. However, Hailu Shewul’s All Ethiopians Unity Party has been reported to have opposed the idea. The ruling party has yet to make its position clear on the matter.

Afan Oromo is the third most widely spoken language in Africa after Hausa and Arabic. It is used as first language in Ethiopia, parts of Kenya and Somalia.

Dear saba koo!!!!!!!!

I am not against your opinion or suggestions. What i want to remark is that it is not few intellectual who decide the kaayyoo of Great nation (OROMO). Never!

Let Oromo themselves think about their destiny from start to finish. It is true that M. may bring positive impacts in the life of our people. But, from my part i doubt whether any political party can eradicate (completely) the present Abyssinian colonization- from which oromos has been suffering in the past 100 years- and establish an INDEPENDENT OROMIA STATE.(except few political parties like OLF.)

Therefore, the problem is not to make Afaan oromo the second official language. (Note that i am not saying that is meaningless). The first action to be taken is to FREE our nation from tyranny. Then we can discuss about Afaan Oromo which is already considered as lingua-franca and spoken by more than 58 million (if i am not mistaken).

Bulcha you are still a centurey behind. Oromo will not negotiate or allow any smooth transfer that is based on lie and deception. Thinking like past means, repeating the mistake. Oromo is more confidence than ever before. The Oromo question is not only the language, it will contineue and no one can stop us. My advice is let Oromo will not intimidated by what the habashs are trying to gain in the time. Oromo queston is Ormia not the language!!!!!!! !!!!!!!1

I think Ethiopia don't have any option if they hold oromo language from being national language. Not second national language, it must be 1rst Ethiopian official national language. Holding Oromo question behind means holding the intrest of this country behind a centuries. If the Oromo question is not answered inf peace way, any of us will not have any development and human right and justice in Horn of Africa. Please not repeat the same mistake that has devided Ethiopia, let it be and good will come out.

thanks medrEK, it is interesting to make afan oromo the official language of ethiopia along with amharic by taking the experience of countries like swezerland, south africa and others. this will with no doubt strengthen the unity among the ethiopian peoples. it is true that the oromos and the amharas are the largest ethnic groups in ethiopia and their languages are also widely spoken in the country.
Eng. Hailu has not still understood the situation in our country; he is praying for unity without any instrument that unifies the poeples of a country.still ethiopian peoples did not believe in unity, which is responsible for our backwardness for about a century. what MEDREK is to do is something good; b/c unity without equality is mere unity.
those who love ethiopia will not oppose the idea forwarded by MEDREK.

Dawit, it is not too late. For sure it is a wonderful idea. I do not think I need to give explanation for this, no body denies Oromos are the MAJORITY in our Ethiopia.

Sileshi, do not try to pretend that Hailu Shawel is proud of who he is when it comes to his oromo line (if he has at all) No body, including himself denies he was a member of AAPO.

Shelish you may have your own problem. In addition it is
obvious to understand from what you speak not only from what you think, that indicate your genetic problem of habasha. But you may say many and more what your father and your grandfather have been said
many years ago however, no one hears you now onward.Whatever you say, oromo will be going to
govern his land and people starting from OFC and to OLF.

Beka,

You said the followingin your statement "2. Oromo should be educated Amharic and Geez language till they become accent free. This second option is something unthinkable. Because in 100 years of Ethiopian History of Amhatranization , only few indivisuals that could be able to learn Amharic competitivey. So the use of Afaan Oromo as an Offocal language can not be a point open to debate" This shows your complete ignorance. You understimate the intellegence of the Oromo people by labeling them as a slow learner. Why do you think it will take them 100 years to learn the Amharic language while the Amharas can easily learn the Oromifa?
Don't mess with Oromos!
