Altered States: Washington’s Little Ethiopia
In this week’s series of Altered States, BBC featured Washington D.C.’s “Little Ethiopia.” Unofficially known as the Diaspora capital, D.C. has the largest concentration of Ethiopian immigrants outside the country. Journalist William Marquez visited Little Ethiopia to explore how the community is “protecting its African heritage and embracing modern America.”
As many as 250,000 Ethiopians live in and around Washington DC, more than in any urban area outside of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa itself. There are so many restaurants, shops and businesses catering to Ethiopians that the community has its own 1,000-page telephone book.
